Handwriting, reading paper books, and listening at normal speed are skills that used to be normal. Today people listen at double speed, and read summaries instead. This discussion asks: are these old skills still needed, or are they just a thing of the past?

  • When was the last time you wrote something by hand?
  • Do you prefer reading paper books or reading on a screen? Why?
  • Do you listen to videos or podcasts at normal speed or faster? Why?
  • Is handwriting still an important skill today? Why or why not?
  • Do children still need to learn cursive writing? Why?
  • In the future, will anyone write by hand at all?
  • Do people today read fewer books than before? Is that a problem?
  • Do you listen to audiobooks or podcasts at 1x, 1.5x, or 2x speed? Why?
  • What do you miss when you listen at faster speeds?
  • Do schools still need to teach handwriting and slow reading? Why?
  • Will these skills completely disappear in 20 years? Why or why not?
